SPF Isn’t Optional - Here’s Why Your Skin Depends On It

If there’s one thing I wish every single client truly understood about their skin…

It’s this:

Sun protection isn’t just about holidays. It’s about how your skin ages — every single day.

And more importantly… how we slow that process down.

UVA vs UVB — what’s actually affecting your skin?

Most people think of sun damage as burning.

That’s UVB - the rays that cause redness and sunburn.

But the real concern when it comes to ageing is UVA.

UVA rays:– penetrate deeper into the skin are present all year round (even on cloudy days) pass through windows and are the number one cause of collagen breakdown.

So even when it doesn’t feel “sunny”…your skin is still being affected.

Collagen breakdown - the part no one talks about enough

Collagen is what keeps your skin:– firm– smooth– lifted

And UV exposure is the biggest contributor to its breakdown.

Not age alone. Not genetics alone.

UV exposure.

Every time your skin is unprotected, it accelerates:– fine lines– loss of elasticity– dullness– uneven texture.

This is why SPF is not just protection, it’s prevention.

Pigmentation - why it keeps coming back

If you struggle with pigmentation, this is where consistency matters most.

UV exposure triggers melanin production.

So even small, daily exposure without protection can:– deepen existing pigmentation, trigger new patches, undo the progress we’re making in your treatments

This is why I will always come back to daily SPF as a non-negotiable part of your plan.

Skin cancer awareness - why this really matters

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and it’s an important reminder that SPF isn’t only about aesthetics.

It’s about protecting the long-term health of your skin.

Consistent daily protection is one of the simplest ways to reduce your risk and it’s something completely within your control.

How much SPF should you actually be using?

Most people simply aren’t applying enough.

As a guide:

👉 You need two full finger lengths of SPF for your face and neck.

Anything less and you’re not getting the level of protection stated on the product.

Reapplication - the step most people skip

Applying SPF once in the morning isn’t always enough.

If you’re exposed to daylight throughout the day, you should be reapplying every 2–3 hours.

Especially if you’re:– outdoors, driving regularly, sitting near windows or on holiday.

“But my makeup has SPF in it…”

This is one I hear all the time.

SPF in makeup is a bonus but it’s not enough on its own.

You would need to apply a much heavier amount than most people do to reach the stated SPF level.

So think of it as extra, not your main protection.

Finding an SPF that works for you

The key is finding something you will actually use consistently.

This is why I work with Heliocare because there are multiple formulations to suit different skin types and preferences.

Whether your skin is:– oily, dry, sensitive or prone to pigmentation

There is an option that will feel comfortable, sit well under makeup and fit into your routine.

Because consistency always comes down to how something feels on your skin.

The bottom line

SPF isn’t something we “add in” when the sun comes out.

It’s something that quietly protects your skin every single day.

It supports everything we do in the treatment room, helps maintain your results and protects the long-term health and quality of your skin.

If you’re unsure which SPF is right for you, or you’d like to review what you’re currently using, just speak to me at your next appointment or drop me a message.
